This National 5 Skills for Work Hairdressing course develops the skills, knowledge and attitudes required to progress onto either further study, and or seek employment working within the hairdressing industry.

You will be given a broad introduction to hairdressing, with practical experience of general salon duties, reception skills, communication and customer care within the salon environment. This will develop your vocational skills, knowledge and understanding.

You will develop skills in: shampooing, conditioning, basic scalp massage, hair styling, along with an introduction to hair colouring. You will learn about current fashion trends, with the opportunity to experiment and produce an image that reflects these.

At SCQF Level 5, you will be expected to be able to work independently and with others on straight forward tasks with support.

Qualification Breakdown

National 5 Skills for Work Hairdressing (C252 75) (24 SCQF credit points)

The course comprises the following mandatory units:

• Hairdressing: Working in a salon environment
• Hairdressing: Salon skills
• Hairdressing: Creative trends
• Hairdressing: An introduction to colour
or
• Hairdressing: Introduction to colouring processes.

Entry requirements

You must be16 or over commencing start date of course.

You must have:

• Have minimum of three National 4’s, one which must be English
• Have a strong interest in all aspects of hairdressing
• Enjoy working as part of a team and have a caring, mature approach.

You will be required to work on each other, so you must be willing to participate as a client/ model for shampooing, and styling techniques, and other treatments.

Target Year Group S5 or S6.

Attendance Pattern

You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 13:30 - 16:00.

Progression Pathways

On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant. This means that should you wish to progress onto the next level you will not have to complete a formal application form.

Employment Routes / Job Areas

You might go on to:

  • A Modern Apprenticeship, leading to a Scottish Vocational Qualification (SVQ) Levels 2 and 3 in Hairdressing/Barbering. Apprenticeships usually last for two years.

With relevant work experience, you can be employed as a salon stylist/barber, with further opportunities for career progression, as salon manager or even a salon owner.
