This course aims to introduce you to the vocational area of Automotive and is an ideal introductory programme if you are considering further studies or a career within this sector.

The Automotive Foundation Apprenticeship will teach you about the car and transport industry. You may want to choose this course if you are interested one day becoming a mechanic, an engineer, selling cars or parts, or just want to learn more about the industry.

Qualification Breakdown

Course units

Within the Skills for Work Award you will complete the following units:

  • Automotive Skills for Work: The Garage                                 
  • Automotive Skills for Work: The Car                                      
  • Automotive Skills for Work: The Technician                           
  • Automotive Skills for Work: The Vehicle Modification Project   

You will use the skills and knowledge you develop in your Skills for Work Award to successfully complete a work-based challenge unit. You will:

  • Work closely with an employer
  • Deliver your project to a real-life client
  • Develop an understanding of the automotive industry

Achievement of this course also gives automatic certification of the following Core Skills:

  • Problem Solving at SCQF level 4
  • Critical Thinking at SCQF level 4

Entry requirements

You must have a clear interest in the subject area as well as working towards:

  • Nat 4 Maths and/or English

Target Year Group S5 and S6

Attendance Pattern

You will attend college on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 - 16:00

Progression Pathways

On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant.  You may be given the opportunity to progress on to the following full-time programme at the Anniesland Campus:

  • City and Guilds Diploma in Introduction to Vehicle System Maintenance

Automotive covers a range of jobs, like:

  • Light motor vehicle technician
  • Heavy motor vehicle technician
  • Auto electrical technician
  • Roadside assistance engineer
  • Parts distribution operative
