This practical metalworking course will develop your practical skills and enable you to demonstrate your ability to complete common tasks within an engineering workshop.
It will help you gain an understand of metalwork practices including bench skills, machine processes, fabrication and thermal jointing. You will participate in project work, which will help to prepare you for the workplace.
It will also give you the opportunity to personally develop and assist you in making informed choices regarding a career in engineering.
You are required to work independently and in a team.
Qualification Breakdown
You will be studying a National 5 award in metalworking skills. The course consists of 24 SCQF points in:
- Bench skills
- Machine processes
- Fabrication and thermal welding.
Assessment for this course is on-going throughout the year and there is no end of course exam. You will complete a practical activity which will allow you to demonstrate your knowledge and application of skills.
Entry requirements
You must have:
- An interest in working in engineering or technical based industry
3 passes at National 4, which should include maths and a technical subject - Some aptitude for graphical forms of communication, as you will be required to read basic drawings
Target year group S5 or S6.
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 – 16:00.
Progression Pathways
On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant. This means that should you wish to progress onto the next level you will not have to complete a formal application form.
You might go on to do:
- NPA in Carpentry and Joinery at SCQF Level 5
- NC Built Environment
- Pre-apprentice Electrician
- Pre-apprentice Plumbing.
The level you might enter would depend on the level and relevance of your other qualifications.
