This BIIAB Award in Fashion and Textiles will help you learn a wide range of textile and garment-making skills.
You will explore different surface textile techniques and gain an understanding of how the design process works. Throughout the course, you will develop practical skills that meet industry standards for making and producing garments.
You will learn and practice basic printing and dyeing methods, as well as develop embroidery skills that can be used to decorate printed or dyed fabrics. As you progress, you will build your technical knowledge of garment construction, including how to safely and correctly use industrial sewing machines.
The course will also help you understand what makes a good manufacturing specification and the quality requirements needed in production. You will improve your abilities in machining and pressing a range of fabrics, and learn why choosing the right interfacing, needle, and thread is so important when making garments.
Finally, you will learn how to spot common machining faults, how to fix them, and how to work safely in a textile workshop.

You will cover:
• Surface patterning UV09 04 4 6 (Portfolio based)
• Garment construction (Industrial) UV10 04 4 6 (Portfolio based)
• Pattern construction UV11 04 4 6 (Portfolio based)
• Design principles in the fashion and textiles industry UV07 04 4 6 (Portfolio based).
Entry requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification. However, you must have a keen interest in developing your skills in fashion and textiles to either complement other qualifications being undertaken or as stand-alone skills to enhance your career opportunities.
Target Year Group S5 or S6.
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 – 16:00.
Progression Pathways
On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant. This means that should you wish to progress onto the next level you will not have to complete a formal application form.
The level you might enter would depend on the level and relevance of your other qualifications.
