This course will introduce you to the painting and decorating trade and give you hands-on experience of real industry tasks.
You will develop practical skills in areas including painting techniques, and decorative finishes while building your confidence in using tools and materials safely.
You will gain a broad understanding of the construction industry, including health and safety, and how different trades work together.
The course will assist you to make informed choices regarding a career in construction. Throughout the course, you will work both independently and as part of a team, developing your communication, problem-solving, and employability skills.
Qualification Breakdown
You will be studying for the City and Guilds Level 1 Award in Construction Skills 6219-04
You will cover:
- Introduction to health and safety in construction
- Painting techniques
- Applying decorative effects
- Painting a panel door.
Assessment for this course is on-going throughout the year and there is no end of course exam.
Entry requirements
You must have:
- An interest in working in the construction industry
- Three passes at National 4, which should include Maths and a Technical subject
- Some aptitude for graphical forms of communication, as you will be required to read basic drawings.
You are required to work independently and in a team.
Target Year Group S5 or S6.
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 – 16:00.
Progression Pathways
On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant. This means that should you wish to progress onto the next level you will not have to complete a formal application form.

- NQ Introduction to Skills in Construction
- NPA in Painting & Decorating SCQF Level 5
The level you might enter would depend on the level and relevance of your other qualifications.
