The Introduction to Nursing course will provide you with an introduction to the nursing profession which will allow you to examine a career in nursing or health care.

The course consists of practical sessions within the College Skills Lab carrying out foundation nursing skills and prevention of infection. An introduction to mental health and first aid will be included. You will investigate professional standards and accountability in effective care practice and gain academic skills that will prepare you for future university study.

Additionally, by completing this course there is the possibility of progressing to Glasgow Caledonian University adult or learning disability BSc Nursing Studies degrees. However, you must have the entry requirements of two Highers at a B Grade (one Higher must be an essay/written subject) and you must also pass this Introduction to Nursing Programme and be highly recommended by the College.

Qualification Breakdown

Introduction to Nursing SCQF Level 5/6.

Units you will study are:

• Essential written and verbal skills for healthcare practice
• Introduction to mental health
• Foundations of care practice
• First aid.

Entry requirements

You must have:

  • National 5 Maths or Application of Maths.

You must also be sitting at least two Highers or have achieved two Highers that meet the Glasgow Caledonian Pathway requirements (two Highers at a B Grade - one Higher must be an essay/written subject).

Target year group S5 or S6.

Attendance Pattern

You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon from 13:30 – 16:00.

Progression Pathways

On successful completion of this course, you will have the opportunity to be treated as an internal applicant or progress to Glasgow Caledonian University directly. This will be dependent on your attendance and commitment to this course.

To progress to Glasgow Caledonian University adult or learning disability BSc Nursing studies degrees, you must have the entry requirements of two Highers at a B Grade (one Higher must be an essay/written subject). You must also pass this Introduction to Nursing Programme and be highly recommended by the college.

If you do not qualify for the Glasgow Caledonian progression, you might go on to do:

  • National Certificate Level 6 Health Care (Pre-Nursing course with clinical placement average one day per week)
  • Higher National Certificate Healthcare Practice (Equivalent to First Year Nursing).

You will be required to have successfully completed the Introduction to Nursing plus have one additional Higher, which must be essay/written subject.
