ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is aimed at students who have a first language other than English. There will be a focus on improving general English as well as raising literacy levels to better enable students to manage their studies.
Lecturers will use a variety of teaching methods such as individual work, group work and games to improve your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. These skills will increase your confidence in everyday life and will help you manage your studies.
Qualification Breakdown
On successful completion of the course, you will achieve an ESOL Unit at SCQF level 2 or 3.
SCQF Level 2 may be an SQA National 2 Unit:
• ESOL: An introduction to beginner English literacies 2
• ESOL for everyday life: Listening and speaking
• ESOL for everyday life: Reading and writing
SCQF Level 3 may be:
• SQA National 3 unit: ESOL for everyday life, or
• SCQF Level 3 units: Grammar in action / Vocabulary in action.
Entry requirements
You must:
• Have basic literacy in English; be able to produce the alphabet orally and written
• Understand the alphabet and be able to sound out simple words.
You will be required to attend a level placement test in June before commencement of the course so that we can place you in the most appropriate level.
Attendance Pattern
You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 13:30 - 16:00.
Progression Pathways
Dependent on your attendance, behaviour, and achievement, you will be guaranteed a place on a full-time or part-time college ESOL course.
You will also have the option on being guaranteed a place on one of our wide range of ESOL Transitions courses which offer subjects like Beauty, Automotive, Early Years, Social Care, alongside ESOL classes.
Employment Routes / Job Areas
You will be given support with Guidance, CVs, job searches and interviews for progression into employment.
