Construction Modern Apprenticeships

Are you looking to train a young employee interested in working within the construction industry in subjects including: joinery, and painting and decorating?

Training is delivered in our specialist workshops and our experienced construction staff will work closely with you and your apprentice to ensure that training meets your needs.

Course content 

PDA Carpentry and Joinery at SCQF Level 6 – College based, usually delivered over the first two years. Training covers health and safety, tools and machinery, construction drawing, fixing, flooring, roofing, timber frames, stairs, doors, windows and fitments.

PDA Painting and Decorating at SCQF Level 6 – College based, usually delivered over the first two years. Training covers surface preparation, paint application, paperhanging, decorative finishes, colour, spray application and safe working practices.

SVQ Carpentry and Joinery (Construction) at SCQF Level 6 – Assessed in the workplace throughout the apprenticeship, covering occupational competence in site carpentry or architectural joinery, safe working practices and trade-specific skills.

SVQ in Painting and Decorating (Construction) at SCQF Level 6 – Assessed in the workplace throughout the apprenticeship, covering surface preparation, paint systems, wallcoverings, health and safety and work completed to industry standards.

Advanced Craft Carpentry and Joinery at SCQF Level 7 – Develops advanced practical and technical skills, including complex stairs and roofs, specialist doors, sustainable building, site measurement and setting out.

Advanced Craft Painting and Decorating at SCQF Level 7 – Develops specialist decorative skills, including metal leaf, advanced wallcoverings, colour and design, faux finishes and complex surfaces.

Teaching methods and assessment

Programmes combine practical workshops, demonstrations, classroom teaching, project work and digital learning.

PDAs are assessed through practical tasks, written and online assessments, questioning and project work.

SVQs are assessed in the workplace through observation, discussion and evidence of completed work, with regular support and visits from a dedicated SVQ Assessor.

Entry requirements

Applicants must be employed in the relevant construction trade and have the support of their employer to undertake the Modern Apprenticeship.

Applicants for Advanced Craft must have completed the relevant PDA at SCQF Level 6 and be employed in a relevant craft occupation within the construction industry.

Fees and materials

For Modern Apprentices, the training and assessment costs are funded by Skills Development Scotland. Eligible CITB-registered employers may also claim apprenticeship grants to support attendance and achievement, subject to CITB eligibility requirements.

Advanced Craft courses are not covered by Skills Development Scotland funding, and the course fees must be paid by the employer.All tools, equipment and materials required for training and assessment will be provided for use while attending college.

Outcome

Successful apprentices will complete a Modern Apprenticeship in either Carpentry and Joinery or Painting and Decorating. This includes:

  • The relevant PDA at SCQF Level 6
  • The relevant SVQ at SCQF Level 6
  • The required Core Skills
  • The industry skills test

Those undertaking Advanced Craft will also achieve the relevant PDA at SCQF Level 7.

Careers or further study

Successful completion provides recognised evidence of occupational competence and supports employment as a qualified carpenter and joiner or painter and decorator. Apprentices may progress to Advanced Craft training, supervisory or management qualifications, construction technician programmes, an HNC or other relevant further and higher education.

Duration

Standard Modern Apprenticeship: four years

Year 1: College-based practical and technical training towards the PDA at SCQF Level 6, combined with workplace experience and the beginning of SVQ evidence collection.

Year 2: Continued college training and completion of the PDA at SCQF Level 6, alongside workplace training and SVQ assessment.

Year 3: Continued workplace training and assessment. Eligible apprentices may also undertake the relevant Advanced Craft qualification at SCQF Level 7.

Year 4: Workplace training and assessment, completion of the SVQ portfolio, industry skills test and Modern Apprenticeship.

An individual training plan will be agreed for apprentices undertaking an accelerated route.
