Mysteries of Outer Space Course

Space course

Glasgow Clyde College is set to be the world’s first college to broadcast a course into outer space.

History is set to be made when the course, which aims to uncover cosmic secrets, detail dark matter and unveil planets and stars, is transmitted more than nine trillion miles to outer space using state-of-the-art software which might one day be heard by an advanced civilisation in a far flung corner of the universe.

The software, which is used by astronomers around the world, will beam the course via radio waves at the speed of light, travelling 186,000 miles in just one second. Though the radio signal will decrease as it spreads through the universe, there is no limit to how far it could travel, meaning that in theory, Glasgow Clyde College could fly through space for thousands of years.

Developed by lecturer George Howie, an expert in all things intergalactic, the Mysteries of Outer Space course will give wannabe astronomers and space travellers a full overview of life beyond our home planet, and has been created with the aim to entice a reply from possible Interstellar lifeforms.

Students can expect to cover a range of topics, including planet comparison and alien sightings, the Earth’s spheres and black holes, with popular theories being discussed, and myths being busted.

George, who has previously taught rocket scientists and satellite analysts, said: “I’m fascinated about outer space, and being the first ever college to beam a course into space is so, so exciting.

“The wonderful thing about the universe is that there is just so much we don’t know - it’s so vast, and yet we know so little. That’s exactly why we are broadcasting our course - because who knows, maybe one day in a galaxy far far away,  it can be enjoyed all over again.”

Scotland’s space industry has seen a steep trajectory in recent years, estimated to take £4billion of the global space market.*

The Mysteries of Outer Space is an online course, running on 18 March 2026, from 6:30-8:30pm, and is available to anyone who wants to learn more about space.
