HNC Computing is one of the SQA’s longest established and most popular qualifications. It covers a wide range of computing subject areas and provides the opportunity to progress to year 2 of various HND qualifications including Computer Science, Networking, Software Engineering or Technical Support. Students on this course have the added opportunity to acquire further vendor qualifications such as Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), CompTIA A+ and Microsoft MCITP which are all highly desired by employers. Please note that due to the impact of COVID-19, this course will be delivered via a blended learning approach - which may include limited face-to-face learning on campus combined with remote learning off-campus and digital learning approaches. If and when delivery is taking place on-campus, there will be reduced student numbers and physical distancing measures in place. Entry requirements (minimum)
- One Higher at Grade C or above in a relevant subject and one National 5 (or equivalent) from Computing, Maths, IT, or Science; OR
- A relevant NC or equivalent qualification; OR
- A suitable employer reference
We will consider your application if you have relevant experience but no formal qualifications.
If you do not meet the entry criteria for your chosen course, you may be offered an alternative course in the same subject area.

The majority of our successful HNC Computing students progress towards HND qualifications. This course also provides you with an entry level to a number of university courses.
Jobs and further study
Graduates of this course will have the opportunity to continue towards their HND in Computing Science, Software Development, Networking, or Cyber Security.
You may also apply to study various computing courses at any of the Scottish universities.
When you apply you will receive an automated email confirming that we have received your application and will be in contact as per the following stages:
- Selection will be by qualifications, possible interview and reference
- Proof of qualifications and a suitable academic reference must be supplied before an offer can be made
- Interviews will take place within four weeks of applying.
You will be informed of the outcome of the selection process by email within 10 working days of the interview.
Once an offer is received, you must reply within 10 working days or risk losing your place.
Once you have accepted your offer, you will be sent further information such as start date, induction and funding information.
