HNC Travel and Tourism gives you the knowledge and skills required to work in a wide range of roles in the tourism industry including retail and business travel, airlines or at the airport, as tour guide or holiday rep, in hotels and for tour operators both in this country and overseas.

On completing the course you can move directly onto the HND Travel and Tourism or go directly into the second year of university on either the BA (Hons) International Business and Tourism Management at Glasgow Caledonian University or the BA (Hons) in Tourism Management at The University of the West of Scotland.

What will I learn?

You will cover a range of subjects designed for employment within the travel industry or to further your studies on the HND Travel and Tourism. Specific subjects you’ll study include:

  • Tour guiding and resort representation
  • International tourist destinations
  • Communication: business communication
  • Influences on the travel and tourism industry
  • Retail travel practice
  • Structure of the travel and tourism industry

  • Creating a culture of customer care

Covid and the Travel Industry

The travel industry has been badly affected by Covid but many experts believe that there will be a recovery at the end of this year.  For example Jet2holidays anticipates 2022 capacity will outstrip 2019 and it remains confident about a strong rebound for the industry. This means that there are going to be incredible opportunities for well-trained people to help rebuild the industry.  All of our travel and aviation courses will equip you with the skills to thrive in the post-Covid travel industry.

Please note that due to the impact of COVID-19, this course will be delivered via a blended learning approach - which may include limited face-to-face learning on campus combined with remote learning off-campus and digital learning approaches. If and when delivery is taking place on-campus, there will be reduced student numbers and physical distancing measures in place. If you require any support in learning digitally please inform the Course Leader or Student Support team.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • One Higher at grade C or above
  • A relevant NQ at Level 6
  • We will consider your application if you can demonstrate an active interest in travel and tourism, but you have no formal qualifications.
  • Entry will be by interview, and one acceptable reference to determine suitability for this course.

On successful completion of the HNC Travel and Tourism you may progress to:

  • HND Travel and Tourism
  • BA (Hons) in Tourism Management at The University of the West of Scotland (year 2)
  • BA (Hons) International Business and Tourism Management at Glasgow Caledonian University (year 2). Please note: Glasgow Clyde College works closely in partnership with Glasgow Caledonian University to offer an Associate Student scheme. This allows you all the benefits of being a Glasgow Calendonian student, as well as a guaranteed place on the third year of a number of their tourism degrees whilst studying at college (subject to achieving certain college grades).
  • Employment in the following sectors:

Making an application

For courses starting in August, you can make up to two applications.

Applications are made to a course and a first choice of campus. If the course is oversubscribed at your first choice you will be automatically considered for alternative sites and may be made an offer without a further application.

I've applied — what happens next?

When you apply:

You will receive an automated email confirming that we have received your application and will be in contact as per the following stages:

  • if you meet the entry requirements or have qualifications pending you will then be invited in for an interview
  • interviews will take place from February and may continue until the course starts in August
  • when you attend the interview you must bring a copy of your qualifications and your reference/s
  • the College’s admissions department will email you an electronic version of the reference form. Please print this and ask your referee to complete it before bringing it along to your interview along with a copy of your relevant proof of entry qualifications.
  • if you are unable to bring these documents to the interview you will be unable to be offered an unconditional offer.

The interview will take the form of a group interview with anything up to 10 other people. During the interview, you will hear about the course and get the chance to ask questions you may have.

If, due to Covid restrictions, the interview is done online using Zoom, you will require to have your webcam and microphone switched on. A photograph of your qualifications and reference will be permitted where virtual interviews are being used.

After you have attended your interview, you will be informed of the outcome of your interview by email within 1–2 weeks. The outcome would be one of the following:

  • unconditional place – you have met all the entry requirements and your place is guaranteed. You will be required to accept this offer to secure your place
  • conditional place – your place is secured pending you meeting the entry requirements. This may mean achieving school or college qualification which you may not be able to provide us until August. You will be required to accept this offer to secure your conditional place
  • waiting list – you have met all entry requirements, however, the course is full. If any spaces become available you may be contacted usually around about the course start date
  • unsuccessful – you have not met the entry requirements for this course and are advised to contact the Student Advice Centre to discuss alternative options which may be available to you.

Once an offer is received, you must reply within 10 working days or risk losing your place.

If a place is unavailable at your campus of your first choice, you may be offered a place at one of our other campuses and you must respond to this within 10 working days.

Once you have accepted your offer, you will be sent out instructions about student funding. This will normally be sent out within three weeks of you accepting the place.

You will also be sent details on an information day. This normally takes place in June and will give you the chance to meet other students on your course, get a tour of the college, meet some ex-students and get a chance to speak to people from industry.

You will then be sent out information about the induction date. This will take place in August, around 2 -3 weeks prior to your course starting.
