National 5 Maths is designed to develop mathematical skills, including numeracy, algebraic thinking, and data handling capabilities to prepare for the final exam in May. National 5 Maths can be used for progression to further study on Higher Maths.
What will I learn?
This course follows the National 5 Mathematics syllabus, structured specifically for evening class students. We start with the essential building blocks before gradually introducing more complex and abstract concepts over the first 25 weeks.
After prelim exams in March and April, the focus shifts to practising core skills and revising key topics to prepare you for the final exam in May.
Our Tuesday and Thursday classes run in sync, giving students the flexibility to attend either or both sessions each week. If you’re studying online on a Tuesday but need extra support with a tricky topic, you can join the in-person class on Thursday.
Likewise, if you usually attend on campus on a Thursday but can’t make it one week, you can dial into the online class on Tuesday. Every Tuesday session is recorded, and all learning materials, including short, pre-recorded lessons, are available via our virtual learning environment.
Our Wednesday class is fully online, making full use of digital resources. Students on this course only need to attend campus for their prelim in March and final exam in May.
Assessments for the Tuesday and Thursday classes take place on campus, with a follow-up review session the following week.
Key assessment dates are:
- October test – end of October
- First prelim – early March
- Second prelim – late April
Whichever option you choose, you’ll have the support you need to build confidence in maths and achieve success in your final exam.

When you study National 5 / Higher evening subjects you will also be expected to commit to additional hours of self-study to support your learning. We'd recommend that studying in this way is suitable for those over 17 due to this workload. You'll also be expected to engage in classes (particularly in online classes) and to have a minimum of 80% attendance in order to go forward to the exam (for both in person and online classes). The college reserve the right to withdraw students who do not engage or attend.
