This 5‑week course offers a practical introduction to essential clinical skills used across healthcare and care settings. Aimed at those working in care or considering a career in health, it combines online learning with face‑to‑face sessions to build both knowledge and hands‑on confidence.

You will develop key skills such as physiological observations, blood glucose monitoring, venepuncture, specimen collection and basic life support, alongside infection control, patient safety and professional responsibilities.

By the end of the course, you will be better prepared to support safe, effective patient care.

What will I learn?

  • Physiological observations
Temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation (SpO₂), peak flow, height, weight and BMI

  • Specimen testing and diagnostics
Specimen collection, urinalysis, blood glucose monitoring, introduction to diabetes

  • Clinical procedures
Adult venepuncture (theory and practical), wound care (dressings, closure systems, removal of sutures and staples)

  • Emergency care skills
Basic life support (BLS) and anaphylaxis management

  • Safe practice and patient support
Patient safety, chaperoning, infection prevention and control, safe administration of medication

  • Professional skills
Roles and responsibilities, professional standards, communication skills, patient‑centred care, supporting vulnerable individuals

This course provides an introduction to a range of clinical skills. It does not provide a formal qualification and does not make learners competent to perform these skills independently in a professional setting.

However, it offers valuable opportunities for personal and professional development. The skills gained can be added to a CV, support career progression, and provide a foundation for further training or employment in healthcare and care roles.
