Are you already employed in a social care setting and wish to gain a formal registered SSSC qualification? Whether you're in adult care, childcare, additional support needs (ASN) education, or residential childcare, this course blends practical experience with theoretical learning to support your professional development.

The course will run on a Wednesday evening 5pm to 9pm and begins on 26 August 2026 and completes in March 2028.

What will I learn?

Throughout HNC Social Services (Online), you will gain a deep understanding of the values and principles of social care, learning how to integrate these with the practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed in professional settings.

Key areas of study include:

  • Care in contemporary society
  • Leadership in care settings
  • Health, wellbeing, and safeguarding
  • Lifespan development and theoretical approaches
  • Promoting health, safety, and security in the workplace
  • Developing practice through reflection and ongoing learning
  • Promoting effective communication
  • Core care practice.

The qualification awarded is the Group Award HNC in Social Services at SCQF Level 7.

To achieve the full award, you must complete 12 credits, structured as follows:

  • Four mandatory core taught unit credits
  • One Graded Unit credit
  • One mandatory option unit credit
  • Three selected optional unit credits
  • Three mandatory work-based vocational SVQ units at SCQF Level 7

You’ll also develop key professional skills such as:

  • Problem solving
  • Moving and handling techniques
  • Managing conflict
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.

This blend of academic study and work-based learning using your employment, ensures that you are well prepared for both the practical and regulatory demands of the sector.

Entry requirements (minimum)

You will need to demonstrate the following evidence:

  • Academic understanding at SCQF Level 6 or equivalent
  • Details of your employment in a relevant formal care, support or ASN support setting
  • A suitable employment reference from your current manager supervising your work in a relevant setting.

You must be employed in a relevant social care setting for the duration of the course as this is necessary to acheive the units of study. Relevant social care settings include:

  • Adult care
  • Home care
  • ASN (Additional Support Needs) / education support
  • Residential childcare
  • Youth work
  • Criminal justice
  • Community work and development.
