Journalism students launch World Cup preview and student lifestyle mag
Second year HND Journalism students have released their summer magazines.
One group has produced a student lifestyle publication and another has created a World Cup preview booklet, Copa Mundial, crammed with exclusive interviews and features ahead of Scotland’s return to the global event for the first time in 28 years.
Copa Mundial spoke with two of the squad members who wore the famous navy blue jersey when Scotland last appeared at it in France 1998. Craig Burley was the last player to score for us at a World Cup and John Collins was the last Scot to put the ball in the back of Brazil’s net when he converted a penalty in the same tournament…and the samba stars are one of our opponents again at this year’s event.
The students have also managed to get expert insights on how Scotland will perform in America thanks to interviews with top Scottish journalists Tony Haggerty, Tam Cowan and Graham Spiers.
The lifestyle mag Aff Campus focuses on a range of areas such as summer events taking place in Glasgow, the best nights out in the city and there’s a preview of the Commonwealth Games taking place this July and August.
It also looks at social issues such as Glasgow’s homelessness crisis, mental health support groups and tips for students on how to strike a course-life balance.
There’s dating advice on what to do you if you think you’re in a situationship and finally, there are exclusive interviews with bands Alcatraz and Scratchcard Wednesday.
The publications are designed as part of the class’s Graded Unit subject.
Jack Lynch, the editor of Aff Campus said: “It’s been an incredible opportunity to see all the work we’ve spent the last eight months on coming together in physical print.
“The experience was stressful to say the least but getting to read through Aff Campus in final form made it all worthwhile.
“I feel a lot more equipped to enter the journalism industry after education now, thanks to this project and it’s taught me a great deal about leadership.”
Leah Johnston, editor of Copa Mundial said: “Stepping up to be editor for this magazine was a privilege. It was a lot of pressure but I live for that. I enjoy it. All the stress my group and I went through paid off so much in the end. This role has benefited me in more ways than I could've imagined. I discovered a lot about myself while we were producing Copa Mundial.
“I'm so buzzing about our magazine finally being produced, it's been a pleasure being the editor for it. It was more than just a group project for us. We put so much extra thought into every little thing and I couldn't be happier than I am right now with it.”
The four students in Copa Mundial launched their magazine with the help of one of their sponsors Pie Sports who gave away their pies with every copy. And those involved in Aff Campus distributed theirs across the three campuses and locations in the city centre.
