Horticulture Department wins Gold at the Scottish Garden Festival

Congratulations to our Horticulture department which is celebrating wining a Gold award at the Scottish Garden Festival. The department's took The four pallet gardens featured horticulture through the years and this was just one of the features that impressed the judges.
The four gardens covered ‘Dig for Victory’, ‘Glasgow Garden Festival’ and ‘850 years of Glasgow’, as well as a ‘patio garden’.
The ‘Dig for Victory’ garden was praised by judges for reminded older visitors of the 1940’s when food was rationed and people grew fruit and vegetables in every available plot of ground. It included a quirky washing line with stockings hanging which brought a smile to all.
The ‘Glasgow Garden Festival’ garden reminded visitors of the amazing event that was held from April to September 1988 on Glasgow’s old dock lands. The vibrant floral display complimented the huge golden tap which reminded us of some of the highlights of the festival. Another walk down memory lane with blooming flowers.
The ‘Glasgow 850’ garden displayed a cross section of a roof garden which could be seen throughout the city on bus stop shelters and other unconventional growing areas. These help to make the city ‘Green’ and provide a planted oasis for insects in built up areas. It also included a hydroponics display which showed how plants can be grown in soilless conditions, for example converted warehouses and indoor buildings, as long as the correct lighting is used.
The final display garden also featured a patio garden, designed, constructed and planted by students and was a great display of creativity and teamwork by all who were involved.
