This CMI Level 3 Certificate in Principles of Management and Leadership (Distance Learning) course is aimed at practising or aspiring managers who will supervise or manage a team to achieve clearly defined outcomes.
This qualification gives managers the communication and motivational skills to help improve operational efficiency. The units provide a broader knowledge of skills to help you be more effective in specific management areas, with increased focus on the areas that are most appropriate to you and your workplace. This course is delivered in a group setting.
What will I learn?
You will complete 2 units:
- Unit 301 - Principles of Management and Leadership (7 credits)
This unit has been designed for learners who want to develop or sharpen their professional edge and enhance personal effectiveness. The unit focuses on the ways organisations operate. The application of management and leadership approaches and how these can positively impact on own role, lead to improved performance, and support teams, colleagues and customers. The aim of the unit CMI 301 is to introduce the foundations for managers, which will be developed throughout all the level 3 units - Unit 302 - Managing a Team to Achieve Results (6 credits)
This unit has been developed to support managers in understanding the nature of teams in the workplace, and how these can be managed to achieve results.
The qualification has been designed for practising or aspiring managers in roles such as:
- Team Leader
- Supervisor
- Project Officer
- Shift Manager
- Foreperson
Delivery:
This online course includes a 1‑hour induction and five 3‑hour sessions. You’ll also complete two assessments in your own time. After the final session, you’ll have two weeks to submit all coursework. No extensions are available.

CMI Levels explained:
Levels 2 and 3
Designed for aspiring, supervisory or first-line managers. Levels 2 and 3 offer a broad range of knowledge, ranging from team leading to project and resource management.
Levels 4 and 5
For mid-managers, Levels 4 and 5 are more appropriate as they focus on developing core management skills such as managing resources, recruitment and information management.
Levels 6 and 7
Levels 6 and 7 are developed for senior managers who have the responsibility to translate organisational strategy into effective performance.
Entry requirements (minimum)
- There are no formal entry requirements however as the units are traditionally assessed through assignment-based work therefore you will need to have a good understanding of the English language and writing.
- Some basic ICT skills will also be required to research, produce your work and send it to the tutor for marking. We can support you with any learning needs you may have.
- Ideally, you need to be working within an organisation or role where you can demonstrate skills and apply knowledge. Alternatively, you could draw on previous experience within an organisation or use an organisation you are familiar with.

Successful candidates can go on to gain the Diploma (with any appropriate institution) by completing further units.
