This Higher Art and Design evening course provides a broad, investigative and practical experience of art and design. Creativity is the key focus. You will develop knowledge of art and design practice by studying artists and designers and their work. You will also develop an understanding of expressive art and design processes and gain related skills. This course provides opportunities for you to be inspired and creatively challenged as you communicate your personal thoughts, ideas and feelings through your work.

What will I learn?

The Higher Art and Design evening course has three key elements as follows:

1. Producing a portfolio of design work

This is a body of coursework which is developed from a design brief. It includes investigative research which is used to produce development work leading to an outcome/ product.

2. Producing a portfolio of expressive work

This is a body of coursework made in response to a theme or stimulus. This will include drawing, development work and experimentation with media and ideas leading to a final artwork.

3. Theoretical study

You will develop knowledge and understanding of artists’ working practices and the social, cultural and other influences affecting their work and practice.

You must undertake an external written exam in art theory.
