If you’re passionate about barbering and love being creative, this course is a great place to start your journey. You’ll gain a recognised qualification while building a strong foundation for a career in the barbering industry.
Throughout the course, you’ll develop key skills such as client consultations, gents’ hair cutting, clipper work, and styling techniques. You’ll also have the opportunity to improve your IT skills, helping you become a confident, well-rounded, and highly effective salon professional.
What will I learn?
During this NQ Gents Haircutting and Barbering course, you will learn:
- Shampooing, conditioning and scalp massage
- Blow drying techniques
- Gents haircutting
- Clipper cutting
- Applying practical skills
- Client consultation techniques
You will also be given the opportunity to develop your IT skills as this is integrated throughout the programme for all written and folio work.
Entry requirements (minimum)
- Three National 4 qualifications (including English), or equivalent; or
- NPA Cosmetology, Skills for Work or equivalent (Level 4)
- If English is not your first language, you should have minimum SQA ESOL National 5 or equivalent for NC/NQ courses
- You must be 16 years or over before course start date
- If you don't have formal qualifications but have relevant life and/or work experience, your application will still be considered
- Suitability for the course will be determined by an interview, a written test and a practical skills test where you will be asked to prove your passion for the industry
- It is recommended that applicants seek a placement in a salon for one day a week for work experience.

For courses starting in August, you can make up to two applications.
Applications are made to a course and a first choice of campus. If the course is oversubscribed at your first choice you will be automatically considered for alternative sites and may be made an offer without a further application.
