What will I learn?
Safe Switching Operation of High Voltage Power Systems (HVSAP04) is delivered over five consecutive days on a 4-week rotation.
The next course starts Monday 24 August 2026.
For full course offerings please email: commercialcourse@glasgowclyde.ac.uk.
This course combines classroom-based learning with practical operational scenarios to develop understanding of high voltage safety procedures, switching operations, system configurations, and safe systems of work in accordance with current industry standards and statutory requirements.
Please note: Successful completion of this course does not make you a Senior Authorised Person (SAP).
This course provides you with the underpinning knowledge, practical awareness and operational fundamentals needed to begin your journey towards Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status. However, this will be subject to the procedures, competency assessments and authorisation processes of your employing organisation.
During the course, you will develop knowledge and understanding in the following areas:
- Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
- Identification of electrical hazards and associated safety precautions
- Configuration and operation of high voltage systems
- Operational safety of HV switchgear
- Preparation, issue and management of safety documents
- Safe isolation and lockout procedures
- Earthing procedures and safe systems of work
- Protection relays and their function within HV systems
- Management of emergency situations
- Investigation of faults and incidents
- Understanding the responsibilities associated with the role of a Senior Authorised Person (SAP)
- Industry-based case studies and group discussions
- Practical switching scenarios and operational exercises.
The course includes both written and practical assessments and is delivered through a combination of:
- Classroom-based theory sessions
- Practical workshop activities
- High voltage switching exercises
- Industry case studies
- Group discussions
- Written and practical assessments.
You will be assessed throughout the programme to demonstrate understanding of both theoretical knowledge and practical safe switching operations.
Subject to final approval, you will receive a City and Guilds Assured Certificate on successful completion of the course.
Entry requirements (minimum)
- Relevant industry experience
- A good understanding of electrical principles and safe working practices associated with industrial or utility-based electrical systems
- Currently a designated Authorised Person (AP) or working within a high voltage operational environment.
Employer and industry links
The course content has been developed to reflect current industry practices and operational standards within the utilities, industrial maintenance, renewable energy and electrical engineering sectors.
The programme is suitable for employers seeking to support the development of personnel working towards greater operational responsibilities within high voltage environments and aligns with industry expectations surrounding safe systems of work, operational switching procedures, and electrical safety management.
Jobs and further study
Successful completion of this course demonstrates your knowledge and understanding of safe high voltage switching operations and supports your continuing professional development within the electrical industry.
The skills and knowledge gained can support career progression in a range of sectors, including utilities and power distribution, renewable energy and wind generation, industrial electrical maintenance, mechanical and electrical engineering services, and high voltage operations and infrastructure.
You may also choose to progress to further specialist high voltage training programmes delivered by Glasgow Clyde College such as:
- High Voltage Wind Turbine Safe Switching Operations (HVWSP04)
- Safe Operation of 33kV High Voltage Power Systems (HV33K05)
- High Voltage Protection Relay Testing Fundamentals (HVPRO06).
Whilst this course provides a strong foundation in high voltage switching and operational practices, completion alone does not confer Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status. Progression towards SAP responsibilities typically requires additional training, operational experience, competency assessment and formal authorisation by your employing organisation.
