This hands-on Cake Decorating - 3D Models and Flowers course covers how to make edible 3D models and flowers for celebration cakes. You’ll practice shaping, supporting and assembling 3D models. The course also covers how to cut. shape, colour and wire flowers to create beautiful floral sprays suitable for cake decoration.

What will I learn?

There is no baking component to this course, only decoration.

During the course, you will cover: 

  • Using modelling tools, colouring and shaping modelling paste and using wooden supports for a 3D model to create a teddy bear cake topper
  • Assembling a range of small modelling paste jungle animals for a safari themed cake
  • Introduction to making wired flowers
  • Cutting, shaping, and wiring petals for a large open peony flower
  • Making small wired flowers and buds for a flower spray
  • Using floral tape to assemble flowers into stems and bunches
  • Cutting and colouring wafer paper to make wired petals, leaves and feathers to create a floral spray
  • Introduction to making a 3D girl and cat figure
  • Designing, making and assembling a themed cake with a model and wired flowers.

You should bring a small roller, fondant modelling tools, flower cutters, flower foam pad, food colouring, edible glue, wooden skewers, 6 inch cake board and a container to store the models.

You will also require a cake ready for decoration on weeks 3, 6 and 8.

Entry requirements (minimum)

You should have prior experience in cake baking and preparation including levelling, filling, crumb coating and covering a cake in fondant. Some basic cake decorating experience is recommended.
