This is a part time introductory course which includes an introduction to the basic concepts, purpose and processes of counselling combined with an exploration of the theories that inform counselling delivery and the importance of reflective practice.
This course is suitable for those looking to develop and enhance their professional people-skills, for personal growth and development or to take a first step towards a career as a professional therapeutic counsellor.
What will I learn?
During this Counselling for Beginners course you'll study a range of units at Level 5 and Level 6 which will cover:
- A definition of counselling
- The aims and purpose of counselling
- The qualities of an effective counsellor
- The counselling process
- Counselling skills development
- Counselling agency profiles
- How to reflect on your own counselling skills
- The basic theories from the:
- Psychodynamic Schools of Counselling
- Cognitive Behavioural School of Counselling
- Humanistic School of Counselling
This course will also introduce you to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling.
You'll also learn to insightfully reflect, and honestly describe, your own personal understanding and skills development, and effectively apply a range of counselling theory to practice.
This course has a number of assessments, both written and practical, attached to it.
Entry requirements (minimum)
The Counselling for Beginners course is appopriate fro adults aged 18 years or older, who have an interest in developing their counselling understanding, knowledge and skills.
You should have a minimum of English and ICT skills at National 5, or equivalent.

The Counselling for Beginners course can be a useful course for anyone who wishes to work with people or to develop skills and knowledge to best support people in a variety of settings (both personally and professionally). It can also enhance opportunities for career development and progression for those already in a working environment. Completion of this course does not permit those who have achieved it to refer to themselves as a qualified counsellor.
If you successfully complete Counselling for Beginners you can progress to HNC Counselling (1 year Full time) at Glasgow Clyde College.
Those who are interested in becoming a Registered British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) counsellor should then complete HND Counselling, which can lead to a registration opportunity as a professional Registered Counsellor with the BACP.
