Make Your First Hat (Beginners Millinery) is an ideal introduction into the world of millinery and hats. You will learn the skills required to make a hat/headpiece and millinery trims using a selection of materials.

Perfect for individuals with an interest in hat making and an ideal opportunity to design a hat for a wedding, a day at the races or another special occasion.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

What will I learn?

Make Your First Hat (Beginners Millinery) covers a variety of skills and techniques including both traditional and non-traditional uses of millinery materials such as: 

  • Millinery Stitches
  • Designing your Hat/Headpiece
  • Hat Blocking Techniques
  • Wiring Brim Edges
  • Sinamay Trims
  • Feather Trims
  • Attaching Trims and Finishing Hats.

You are asked to provide your own materials for the class. This will depend on the hat or headpiece that you decide to make. The tutor will explain and advise what you need on an individual basis.

You should also bring a notebook and pen as well as a basic sewing kit comprising of measuring tape, scissors, tailors chalk or pencil, sewing needles and matching thread for your project.

No formal entry requirements, just enthusiasm and an interest in learning hat-making skills.
