Journalism students shortlisted for Herald Student Press Awards

The Herald Student Press Awards

We're excited to share that two of our journalism students are shortlisted for The Herald Student Press Awards 2025, with the winners announced on 15 May.

John Shiels is shortlisted for the 'Student Sport Writer of the Year' category and David Forrest is shortlisted in the 'Scoop of the Year' category.

Ross Nixon, Curriculum Manager for Journalism comments, "I'm absolutely thrilled for David and John. Both students have been so proactive this year and these nominations are a great acknowledgement of the hard work they've carried out since August. They seized on opportunities to report on matches in the both the men's and women's games, covering the Champions League, a cup final as well as league games. They then managed to make contacts through their professional approach which helped them gain great interviews and for David in particular, a great exclusive. The teaching team on the HND Journalism and Content Production and NCTJ diploma courses are delighted for them and they're already winners in our minds.

Huge thanks goes to the Herald and Newsquest for recognising the talent we have in the industry and for organising these awards. And thank you to all the sporting clubs who help the students with matchday accreditation. Their generosity and support is fundamental to helping the next generation of sports journalists."
