English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) courses help you to improve your Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking skills in English. Our courses prepare you for further study and getting a job. Studying ESOL at Glasgow Clyde College will also increase your confidence to speak English for everyday life in Glasgow:
- social situations – with friends and classmates
- work
- going to the doctor
- helping your children at school

What will I learn?

Our students come from many backgrounds, nationalities and ages (from 16 upwards). You will have the opportunity to meet and make friends with people from many different cultures.  Classes are large, lively and well attended and the atmosphere in the teaching groups is informal.  You will work in pairs and groups so that you can help each other to learn. 

There are courses at seven levels of ESOL and most levels are available for both part time (four classes a week) and full time study (five classes a week).

  1. Literacies
  2. Beginners
  3. Elementary
  4. Pre-Intermediate
  5. Intermediate
  6. Upper intermediate
  7. Advanced (Higher ESOL – 2 classes a week)

How to apply

You cannot register directly for college ESOL. You can join a Glasgow waiting list for all ESOL classes in College and the Community. The register will contact you when there is a place available.

If you wish to study at Advanced level, you can apply for Higher ESOL here.

Your English Level
When you apply to the Glasgow ESOL register it is important that you tell us your level. Glasgow Clyde College works at all ESOL levels from Literacies through to Advanced. Most levels are available for both PT and FT study. If you do not know your English Level you should take a test as soon as possible.

When you go to the Glasgow ESOL register you will also find information about how to arrange a test.

Please note that due to the impact of COVID-19, this course will be delivered via a blended learning approach - which may include limited face-to-face learning on campus combined with remote learning off-campus and digital learning approaches. If and when delivery is taking place on-campus, there will be reduced student numbers and physical distancing measures in place. If you require any support in learning digitally please inform the Course Leader or Student Support team.

Jobs and further study

ESOL students can progress to Employment, Vocational FE at various levels, Higher Education, or further ESOL.
