The Safe Switching Operation of High Voltage Power Systems (HVSAP04) course is aimed at experienced operatives with responsibilities within high voltage procedures. The course is particularly suitable for those working in utilities, industrial maintenance, renewable energy, and mechanical and electrical sectors where the safe operation and switching of HV systems is required.

This programme is currently City & Guilds Assured pending approval.

By booking candidates confirm they meet the recommended entry requirements and understand that this course alone does not confer Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status.

COURSE DATES AVAILABLE:
(1) WC Monday 01-Jun-26 OR
(2) WC Monday 15-Jun-26 OR

What will I learn?

This programme combines classroom-based learning with practical operational scenarios to develop understanding of high voltage safety procedures, switching operations, system configurations, and safe systems of work in accordance with current industry standards and statutory requirements.

Please note: Successful completion of this course does not make candidates a Senior Authorised Person (SAP).

The course is designed to provide the underpinning knowledge, practical awareness, and operational fundamentals to support individuals beginning the pathway towards SAP status, subject to the procedures, competency assessments and authorisation processes of their employing organisation.

During the course, candidates will develop knowledge and understanding in the following areas:

  • Electricity at Work Regulations 1989
  • Identification of electrical hazards and associated safety precautions
  • Configuration and operation of high voltage systems
  • Operational safety of HV switchgear
  • Preparation, issue and management of safety documents
  • Safe isolation and lockout procedures
  • Earthing procedures and safe systems of work
  • Protection relays and their function within HV systems
  • Management of emergency situations
  • Investigation of faults and incidents
  • Understanding the responsibilities associated with the role of a Senior Authorised Person (SAP)
  • Industry-based case studies and group discussions
  • Practical switching scenarios and operational exercises

The course includes both written and practical assessments and is delivered through a combination of:

  • Classroom-based theory sessions
  • Practical workshop activities
  • High voltage switching exercises
  • Industry case studies
  • Group discussions
  • Written and practical assessments

Candidates will be assessed throughout the programme to demonstrate understanding of both theoretical knowledge and practical safe switching operations.

Subject to final approval, candidates will receive a City & Guilds Assured Certificate on successful completion of the course.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Relevant industry experience.
  • A good understanding of electrical principles and safe working practices associated with industrial or utility-based electrical systems.
  • Currently a designated Authorised Person (AP) or working within a high voltage operational environment.

Employer and industry links

The course content has been developed to reflect current industry practices and operational standards within the utilities, industrial maintenance, renewable energy and electrical engineering sectors.

The programme is suitable for employers seeking to support the development of personnel working towards greater operational responsibilities within high voltage environments and aligns with industry expectations surrounding safe systems of work, operational switching procedures, and electrical safety management.

Articulation Routes

Successful completion of this course may support progression onto further specialist high voltage training programmes delivered by Glasgow Clyde College:

  • High Voltage Wind Turbine Safe Switching Operations (HVWSP04)
  • Safe Operation of 33kV High Voltage Power Systems (HV33K05)
  • High Voltage Protection Relay Testing Fundamentals (HVPRO06)

These progression routes are designed to support continued professional development within high voltage operations and may contribute towards internal company authorisation pathways for Authorised Person (AP) and Senior Authorised Person (SAP) responsibilities.

Jobs and further study

Successful completion of the course demonstrates knowledge and understanding of safe high voltage switching operations and supports continued professional development within the electrical industry.

The course may support career progression within sectors including:

  • Utilities and power distribution
  • Renewable energy and wind generation
  • Industrial electrical maintenance
  • Mechanical and electrical engineering services
  • High voltage operations and infrastructure

Candidates may also progress onto advanced high voltage training programmes at Glasgow Clyde College, including specialist courses in wind turbine switching operations, 33kV systems, and protection relay testing.

Completion of this course alone does not confer Senior Authorised Person (SAP) status. Progression towards SAP responsibilities would normally require additional training, operational experience, competency assessment, and formal authorisation by the candidate’s employing organisation.
