Get into HN Science is aimed at recent or winter school leavers who have some Science knowledge and who wish to progress to study an HN Science course such as HNC Applied Science, HND Applied Biological Science or HND Industrial Biotechnology. If you have a strong background in just one science subject but don't have the necessary entry requirements in Maths or Chemistry, then this course could be for you. It’s also perfect for those planning to study HNC Applied Science who may have a had a break in their learning and who want to refresh their knowledge and study skills before starting the qualification.

What will I learn?

In order to prepare you for HN study at Level 7 you'll:

  • Study Biology: Biochemistry, physiology and microbiology (Level 6)
  • Develop your fundamental Chemistry skills
  • Refresh your Maths skills

Practical and academic skills will be embedded throughout the course to give you the confidence you need to progress to HN study successfully.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Five National 5 qualifications at Grade C or above, to include National 5 English and National 5 Maths / Application of Maths and one from either National 5 Biology or National 5 Chemistry, which should have been completed within the last two years; OR
  • We will also conside a mixture of National 5 / Higher qualifications, provided that sufficient science subjects are taken; OR
  • Partial completion of NQ Applied Science would also be considered.
  • If English is not your first language you will need to have achieved Higher ESOL at Grade C minimum, or equivalent.

Jobs and further study

If you successfully compelte this course you could progress to study courses starting in August at Glasgow Clyde College, including:

  • HNC Applied Science
  • HND Applied Biological Science
  • HND Applied Bioscience with Chemistry
  • HND Industrial Biotechnolgy

From there you could progress to 2nd or 3rd year on various Life Science degrees  including Pharmacy, Biomedical Science and Optometry.

When you apply

You will receive an automated email confirming that we have received your application (remember to check your SPAM folder). 

Your application will be reviewed by the Science team and you will either be will be processed as follows: 

  • Review of Application - your application form will be reviewed and if successful, you will be sent an unconditional offer for the course. At this stage we will look at your past education, personal statement, relevant experience and your chosen career path. It is therefore important that your application form is completed fully.
  • Information Session - you will be invited to an information session which will take place on campus in learly December / January. 
  • Advised that your application is unsuccessful – you have not met the entry requirements for this course and are advised to contact the College Student Advice Centres to discuss alternative options which may be available to you. 
  • We aim not to reject an application and if you don’t meet the entry requirements you may be referred to a different course or level.  

 If you are invited to an information session, you will be informed of the outcome of your interview by email within 14 working days. The outcome will be one of the following: 

  1. Unconditional offer of a place – you have met all the entry requirements and your place is guaranteed. You will be required to accept this offer to secure your place. 
  2. Conditional offer of a place – your place is secured pending you meeting the entry requirements. This may mean achieving school or college qualifications which you may not be able to provide to us yet. You will be required to accept this offer to secure your conditional place. Once your conditions are met this will change to an unconditional offer of a place which you must accept before you can enrol on the course.  
  3. Waiting list – you have met all entry requirements, and have been interviewed however, the course is now full so you have been placed on a waiting list. If any spaces become available you may be contacted, usually around the course start date. We would advise that you also consider other application options. 
  4. Reserve list – following your interview, you have unfortunately not been successful in this round of recruitment. We have placed your name on a Reserve list and your application may be reconsidered at a later date. This could happen any time up to the start date of the course but it is very possible that you will not be offered a place. We would advise that you also consider other application options. 
  5. Unsuccessful – your interview has been unsuccessful. You may be offered a place on a course at a different level, or advised to contact the College Student Advice Centres to discuss alternative options which may be available to you. 

Once an offer is received, you must reply within 14 working days or risk losing your place, as the system will automatically decline your offer after 14 days. 

Once you have accepted your offer, you will be sent out instructions about student funding and learning inclusionThis will normally be sent out in December / January.
