This hands-on Cake Decorating - the Art of Buttercream course covers how to achieve a smooth buttercream finish, piping to create texture as well as intricate and detailed piping techniques such as roses, shells, strings, swags and frills. The course also covers colouring buttercream and using a palette knife to create flowers and leaves for decoration.

What will I learn?

There is no baking component to this course, only decoration.

During the course, you will cover: 

  • Smooth buttercream cake covering
  • Piping techniques: roses, shells, stars,beads, frills, swags and strings.
  • Colouring buttercream
  • Chocolate buttercream
  • Palette knife decoration
  • Creating texture with buttercream
  • Shaping a cake
  • Designing a cake.

You should bring piping bags, piping nozzles, a cake scraper/smoother, food colouring and artists palette knives.

You will also require a crumb coated cake and/or cupcakes - the lecturer will inform you of these requirements each week.  

Entry requirements (minimum)

You should have prior experience in cake baking and preparation including levelling, filling, and crumb coating.
