Glasgow Clyde does the double at Scottish Student Journalism Awards

Glasgow Clyde College’s Journalism department shone at last night’s Scottish Student Journalism Awards, taking home two prizes.

Ruth Mackenzie, from Moray, was awarded the Calum Macdonald Memorial Award, while Catrina Cochrane (pictured), from Glasgow, won in the Arts and Entertainment Story of the Year category. Both are students on the HND Practical Journalism course at the College’s Cardonald Campus.

“I'm delighted to have won the Arts and Entertainment award as there were ten entries and having read a few of them online, there were some amazing, entertaining stories nominated,” said Catrina.

"My article “It's Politics, Jock, But Not As We Know It” was a reportage piece based on National Collective, an artists for Scottish independence campaign, an in particular their official launch in Edinburgh at the end of last year.

"The evening itself was fantastic - it was a great chance for students to chat freely with journalists who are at the top of their game and are more than happy to pass on the wisdom of their own experiences.”

The top prize, Scottish Student Journalist of the Year, was won by University of Strathclyde’s Sam Shedden. Sam also took home Feature of the Year and was commended in the Sport Story of the Year category. Another Glasgow Clyde student, Sean Murphy, was commended in the Calum Macdonald Memorial Award.

Stephen Jardine, formerly of STV, hosted the ceremony, with the BBC’s Jackie Bird and ITN’s Scotland correspondent Debi Edward were among the guests. The submissions were judged by a panel of leading figures in Scottish journalism, including The Herald editor Magnus Llewellin and BBC Scotland investigations correspondent Mark Daly.
