The Engineering Academy

The Engineering Academy is a pioneering programme that offers you an alternative route into university and employment as a Strathclyde student; the first year is an enhanced HNC programme with direct transfer into second year of one our engineering degrees.

The Academy is a collaboration between the University of Strathclyde, partner colleges and the engineering industry, delivering a pathway to a range of engineering degrees in our leading Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment. Find out more about the Engineering Academy by watching the short film below.

At Glasgow Clyde College, the first year of the Engineering Academy programme is taken as an enhanced HNC Electronic Engineering. Students who achieve the required grades on this course will then transfer to second year of BEng Honours: Electronic and Electrical Engineering or Meng: Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde.

The curriculum for the HNC Electronic Engineering programme at Glasgow Clyde College has been designed in consultation with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. During the first year, students will have the opportunity to attend hands-on classes which are delivered at the University.

To progress on to the 2nd year of the degree programme, students are required to successfully complete all of the units delivered as part of the HNC curriculum, obtaining an 'A' in the graded unit.

All Engineering Academy students are registered students at the University of Strathclyde from year one onwards. At the University students will have access to learning and teaching facilities, the library, their own Academic Counsellor, the University’s Students’ Association, the Centre for Sport and Recreation and be invited to a number of events and additional classes that will be delivered at the University during their first year to assist with the transition from college to university.

In addition, the Engineering Academy students will have the opportunity to apply for:

  • Financial support from year 2 onwards via company sponsorships
  • Specific mentoring and professional development with a sponsoring company
  • Paid summer placements, allowing students to put their theory into practice, between year 2 and 3, and year 3 and 4
