Pre-Apprenticeship Electrical Installation (January 2018)

This is the Electrical Installation Pre-Apprenticeship work programme delivered at Intermediate Level 2. It is designed to produce a pool of prospective ‘apprentice' electricians ready and waiting to join the Electrical Contracting Industry. We have links with a large number of electrical contractors in the west of Scotland who successfully interview candidates who are proving their worth on this course, with 80% of students from last year's programme gaining employment

  • Fundamental Electrical Principles
  • Basic Electrical Systems and Protection
  • Introduction to Renewables
  • Basic Electrical Installation Skills
  • Installation Project
  • Health and Safety at Work (appraisal gaining an ESC Card)
  • Computer Aided Design
  • Mathematics
  • Information Technology

Entry requirements (minimum)


  • Three Standard Grades at Credit Level or Intermediate 2s or National 5s in English, Maths and preferably Physics, or a qualification to this standard in a craft subject in place of Physics
  • Having previously passed the SECTT test will be an advantage but it is not a necessity, as it will be administered during the course
  • This course is designed for school leavers aged 16 to 19.

Progression routes

  • Modern Apprenticeship in Electrical Installation (SVQ Level 3)
  • HNC Electrical Engineering (HNC course designed for electricians who wish to further their understanding and prospects within the industry)
  • SECTT statistics show that 80% of participating students gain employment from this course.
