NC Stringed Musical Instrument Making - Level 6

This advanced musical instrument making course at Glasgow Clyde College is designed to provide you with a wide range of specialist skills for employment/self-employment in the field of musical instrument technology. The flexible course content provides articulation to other related higher level studies in the field of stringed instrument construction.

Students are welcomed from throughout the European Union and interviews are available via telephone and Skype.

  • Servicing and Modifying Electric and Electro-Acoustic Stringed Instruments 
  • Inlay and soundhole cutting techniques 2
  • Introduction to Acoustics
  • Manufacture of Body components 2
  • Material Science for Stringed Instruments
  • Stringed Instrument Design
  • Stringed Instruments: Assembling the Components of an Instrument Body 2
  • Stringed Instruments: Fault finding and Minor Repairs: Classical and Flat top guitars
  • Stringed Instruments: Finishing
  • Stringed Instruments: Fitting Up the Violin 2
  • Stringed Instruments: Major Repairs
  • Stringed Instruments: Manufacture of Neck 2

Entry requirements

Successful completion of a National Certificate course in Musical Instrument Making or Orchestral Instrument Repair.

Successful students may apply for the following programmes:

  • Newark College (Part of Lincoln College) Level III Violin or Guitar Making

Successful completion of this course can lead to employment / self-employment opportunities in Musical Instrument Repair and Technology.
