HND Coaching and Developing Sport

This HND course gives students the underpinning knowledge and practical coaching skills required to pursue a career in coaching and developing sport, or to progress to Higher Education.

A PVG will be required to undertake the mandatory placement that is embedded in the course. 

Course content

Content may include: 

Year one:

  • Sports coaching theory
  • Coaching children
  • Anatomy and physiology
  • Conduct and ethics
  • First aid
  • Work experience

Year two:

  • Improving coaching
  • Sports mechanics
  • Fitness conditioning
  • Sports injuries
  • Sports nutrition
  • Inclusive coaching

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • two Highers at C or above, one of which must be English-based
  • a relevant level 6 qualification in sport such as NC Sport and Exercise (Level 6), NQ Health and Fitness (Level 6), NQ Sports Coaching (Level 6) NQ Sport and Fitness (Level 6) - must include Communications at Level 6
  • demonstrable active interest in sport or fitness
  • two acceptable references
  • successful applicants will be required to attend an interview
  • applications are welcome from those without formal qualifications who can demonstrate an active interest in sport or fitness
  • entrance exam for those without formal qualifications, but with relevant life/work experience
  • for those holding a relevant HNC it may be possible to access Year 2 of the HND. Please contact the Faculty directly.

Progression routes

  • 3rd year entry to BSc (Hons) Sports Coaching at University of the West of Scotland
  • 3rd year entry to BSc (Hons) Sports Development at University of the West of Scotland
  • Employment in the sports industry.
