HND Creative Industries: Television

The HND Creative Industries: Television course is one of only two HNC/HND courses in Scotland to be awarded the Creative Skillset tick. This is a quality mark indicating those courses, which are best, suited to prepare you for a career in the Creative Industries.

This ensures that the course keeps up with the rapid pace of creative change, and that student’s benefit from using the latest technologies and industry practice throughout their studies.

The ‘HND Creative Industries: Television’ course is a springboard into work in the television and film industry and is taught by experienced professionals, using industry standard equipment and workflows. Teaching materials and equipment are constantly updated, in consultation with industry practitioners, to reflect developments in technology and working practice.

The teaching staff all have extensive industry experience and maintain current links with key industry players. Our part-time staff are all working freelancers.

The course is part of the Skillset Media Network and Creative Loop, these organisations give the students opportunities to gain work experience and employment.

Our students have gone on to work for the national broadcasters, independent production companies, and facilities houses and as freelance operators in both television and film.

Course content

  • Year 1: Build technical skills including camera operation, lighting, editing and sound recording. Develop production and directing skills through numerous projects and assignments, which allow you to build a portfolio of practical projects.
  • Year 2: Develop your technical skills in camera, lighting and editing. Essentials of script writing, directing and production skills for drama. Gain industry understanding through master classes delivered by working professionals; create a showreel and CV highlighting your practical skills.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • NQ Television with Photography (SCQF level 6) (Accompanied by teaching staff recommendation)
  • NC Media: Television Production 
  • NC Media (SCQF level 6) 
  • At least one Higher (or equivalent), English is preferred
  • Relevant work experience, programme ideas or similar
  • Boundless enthusiasm, creativity and team-working skills are essential
  • Applications are welcome from those without formal entry qualifications but who can demonstrate an interest in the creative industries through experience, preferably with an emphasis on television and video production.
  • For those holding a relevant HNC it may be possible to access Year 2 of the HND. Please contact the Faculty directly.
Selection process information

Progression routes

  • 3rd year entry to Broadcast Production of Filmmaking and Screenwriting at University of the West of Scotland
  • 2nd or 3rd year entry to various film and TV courses at universities in the UK and overseas.
  • Employment in the TV or film industry - graduates of this course have found work with BBC Scotland, Endemol, MTP, Visual Impact, MNE, Savalas, 4:2:2 and many other independent companies. 

This course has been awarded the Creative Skillset Tick. The Tick is a quality mark indicating the courses and apprenticeships best suited to prepare you for a career in the Creative Industries.

For this course to be awarded the Creative Skillset Tick, you can be sure that it has undergone a rigorous assessment process conducted by experts working in the Creative Industries. They only give the Tick to those courses and apprenticeships that have the strongest links with industry.

This ensures that the courses keep up with the rapid pace of creative change, and students benefit from using the latest technologies and working with industry throughout their studies.
