SWAP Access to Biological and Chemical Sciences

The course is for adults returning to education and is designed to provide them with the skills knowledge and understanding required for application to the first year of a university degree course or to HNC courses in Science.  It is run in partnership with SWAP West who negotiate reserved university places at a range of participating universities for graduates of this and other SWAP courses.  The course is accepted by partners in lieu of Highers or other university entry qualifications.  As well as covering subject knowledge this course also includes intensive guidance to develop confidence, core skills and teach university survival skills.

  • Chemistry (Higher Units)
  • Maths (National 5 Units)
  • Physics (National 5 Units)
  • Communications (Higher)
  • Information Technology   
Assessment will be continuous with a mixture of practical and theoretical assessments. There is no final examination.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • There are no formal entry requirements but candidates should typically have had a break from full time education of at least 2 years and be able to demonstrate an aptitude for science. ‘Life’ skills, experience and maturity are important. 
  • Communication and Numeracy skills are essential. An entrance test will be used to support this.
  • One suitable reference.

Progression routes

  • Successful candidates can gain 1st year entry to a range of BSc degrees in ‘pure’ science subjects like Chemistry or Biology or in applied areas such as Biomedical/ Bioscience, Immunology, Biochemistry, Food Science, Marine Biology, as well as others.  SWAP partners include Glasgow University, Strathclyde University, Stirling University, UWS and GCU among others, although this qualification may also be accepted by other universities throughout the UK.  
  • HNC Applied Sciences at Glasgow Clyde College or other institutions.
