Do you have an interest in in finding out more about the human mind and behaviour? You should be interested in developing your thinking, research and communication skills, either to pursue study and career options related to psychology, or to broaden your learning experience.

The Personal Development Award in Psychology aims to provide you with an understanding of psychology and will look at the historical development of psychology since the 19th Century. The major schools of thought that have influenced the development of psychology will be considered (behaviourist, cognitive, psychoanalytic and biological) as well as the contributions of famous psychologists.

Qualification Breakdown

On successful completion, you will achieve a PDA Psychology (GK24 47) at SCQF Level 7

Analysis and research into psychological topics will be studied. The course consists of two SQA units in Psychology.

PDA in Psychology – SCQF level 7

  • History and Development of Psychology
  • Explanation and Research of Psychological Topics

This course is demanding in terms of written work, study at home and group work.

Please note:   this course is demanding in terms of written work, group work and studying at home in your own time.

Course Assessment:  The course will be assessed in a variety of ways including an essay response, a closed book assessment and a research assignment. The purpose of the assignment is to assess research and communication skills appropriate to psychology. Small groups will choose to investigate a relevant research topic, design the research method, conduct the research, and then write a report using a standardised format. Each individual will write their own report.

Entry requirements

You must:

  • have Higher English at A or B level. 
  • be committed to using your own time to self study.

Attendance Pattern

You will attend college on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 13:30 - 16:00

Progression Pathways

Successful completion of course, along with excellent attendance, attitude and commitment will provide you with the opportunity to internally progress on to:

  • HNC Social Sciences (Year 1) or 
  • HND Social Sciences (Year 2).

The entry point (level you would study) would be dependent on the level and relevance of your other qualifications.

You might also go on to:

  • a university degree courses in psychology, neuropsychology, arts, social sciences, sciences, criminology or business studies.
