The new Electric Vehicle Charging qualification (2921) has launched and replaces the (2919). This City & Guilds short course is for practising / qualified electricians only.

What will I learn?
Following the increase of government investment in the infrastructure of electric vehicle charging, this course offers electricians the opportunity to learn how to install domestic, commercial and on-street electrical vehicle charging points in compliance with BS 7671 and the new IET Code of Practice.
This course provides an understanding of how to install the range of equipment and systems available and includes exclusive guidance on electrical requirements. It will provide learners with the essential skills required to install electric vehicle charging points in public, private and commercial locations including:
- Design and installation
- Inspection and testing
- Commissioning and handover
This course is delivered in compliance with BS 7671 and the new IET Code of Practice. You will be assessed by an online multiple-choice test and a practical assignment.
The course is classroom-based. IT skills are fundamental as the online assessment is undertaken on a PC or laptop (provided by the College).
Cost includes training, exam fee and the IET Code Of Practice For Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation (5th Edition).
Candidates require access to the following materials:
- IET Wiring Regulations, BS7671 18th Edition Amendment 2 (BS7671:2018+A2:2022)
- Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing, BS7671 18th Edition Amendment 2 (BS7671:2018+A2:2022)
If required these resources are included for an additional fee, or details of suitable retailers can be provided to enable you to purchase these materials independently.
As this course is categorised as part-time commercial training, it is not eligible for any fee waiver or funding via the College. The student is liable for the payment of fees, unless an external training grant or employer support is confirmed at time of booking.
Entry requirements (minimum)
This course is for practising electricians and candidates must hold:
- City & Guilds SVQ in Electrical Installation at SCQF level 7*
- Up to date BS 7671 Requirements for Electrical Installations
- ECS Gold Card (for domestic electrician), JIB Electrician or Approved Electrician Card
The qualifications above must have been achieved no more than 5 years prior to starting this qualification or there must be evidence the candidate has remained current by holding the latest version of the Wiring regulations qualification.
*Other Awarding Organisations, English equivalent NVQs and equivalent historical qualifications (list available via IET.org) are also acceptable.
These entry requirements are stipulated by the College as per recommendations from City & Guilds to ensure candidates have the potential and opportunity to successfully complete the course. Entry requirements verification is required to enrol.
Jobs and further study
On completion, you will be able to gain accreditation with the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and apply for the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Grant (EVHS) or Workplace Charging Grant (WCS) to support the wider use of electric and hybrid vehicles. EVHS or WCS claims must be authorised by OZEV before any charge points are installed.
There is no need to resubmit evidence documents for those already authorised under the EVHS who wish to be authorised under the WCS.
OZEV, or its representatives, will process applications and confirm authorisation in writing with a unique authorisation number. Please read the Electric Vehicle Homecharge Scheme guidance for installers and the Workplace Charging Scheme guidance before applying.
