This SQA Millinery: Advanced course provides you with an opportunity to build on and enhance your existing millinery skills by using traditional and innovative techniques. You will learn the skills and knowledge required to produce a portfolio of millinery samples and finished items.

What will I learn?

This hat-making advanced millinery course will be taught by Shona Crozer, who is an award-winning Milliner, with over 15 years of experience, she has taught Millinery at Glasgow Clyde College for the past 5 years. Shona trained in Glasgow and has further enhanced her skills by attending workshops taken by international milliners in Ireland and London. Shona’s expertise is in both traditional and contemporary styles, using both conventional and unconventional materials.

You will learn how to:

  • Work with a range of advanced millinery materials such as silks, silk abaca, thermoplastics, velvet and skins
  • Advanced trimming techniques
  • Methods of attaching and finishing to an advanced level
  • Dyeing, colouring and painting methods
  • Advanced hand and machine stitch techniques
  • Design and make hats.

You will create a capsule collection which may be exhibited within the College and at external exhibitions and fashion shows.

Note:  students are to provide their own materials

Entry requirements (minimum)

SQA Millinery: Introduction qualification or prior skills in creating hats is preferable but not essential. 

Jobs and further study

It is possible to progress onto full – time HND programme from this course.
