COVID-19 has highlighted the need for well-trained laboratory technicians with both practical skills and knowledge of Health and Safety and Good Lab Practice. This course has been developed to help meet that need.

Industry has been aware of this shortage for some time. However, companies are finding that university graduates lack the required skills, meaning that considerable effort needs put into re-training graduates on the job. Many companies are also struggling with high staff turnover.
As a result, the life science industry has been investing in college courses for the training and recruitment of technically competent individuals in recent years.

We are therefore proud to deliver a first-of-a-kind course from January 2022.

What will I learn?

Our brand new NPA Laboratory Science course consists of 8 units covering:

  1. Introduction to GLP/ GMP Quality Standards and Health & Safety in science
  2. Fundamental Chemistry - the key aspects of fundamental and practical chemistry.
  3. Maths for Science - build your base knowledge of basic calculations, algebra and statistics related to science.
  4. Microbiological Techniques - Identifying microorganisms/ growth limitation/ sterilisation and cultures.
  5. Experimental Procedures in Biology - Develop practical and analytical skills related to working in biology laboratories.
  6. Experimental Procedures in Chemistry - Develop practical and analytical skills related to working in chemistry laboratories.
  7. Biotechnology - Explore the crucial role of biotechnology in today's society (e.g. vaccine production, conversion of waste materials into valuable products, and in fermentation.
  8. Microbiology - Develop knowledge and skills relating to the structures of microorganisms of biotechnological significance, microbial metabolism, genetic engineering and infection and immunity.

Key Facts:

  • This course starts on 24th January 2022.

    Days: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday (15 hours per week)

    Delivery:  Blended, some on campus and some online using Microsoft Teams

  • You can fit family caring duties or family committments with the course undertaking being 2.5 days per week.
  • Total course duration is 18 weeks.
  • Course content is created in-line with industry partners with many of our science graduates and apprentices from the College now working in laboratories and pharmaceutical brands.
  • You will have significant in-demand skills for pathways to employment as a Laboratory Technician or you can progress to further HNC/ HND and then onto life science degree pathways.

Finance & Funding

This course is fully funded for learners; you will also be able to apply for additional student support funding from Glasgow Clyde College to help with travel expenses and child-care.

Entry requirements (minimum)

National 5 or equivalent on Chemistry and Biology, though this may not be required with relevant work experience. We offer those courses in college, and also NQ5 applied sciences or NQ6 Applied sciences which would be good routes into this programme.

Making an application

For courses starting in August, you can make up to two applications.

Applications are made to a course and a first choice of campus. If the course is oversubscribed at your first choice you will be automatically considered for alternative sites and may be made an offer without a further application.
