What will I learn?

This City & Guilds 18th Edition course is a part-time commercial training course that ensures candidates are up to date with the latest industry regulations on wiring and the safe use and operation of equipment and systems. Glasgow Clyde College has adapted this course to reflect the changes within Amendment 2 of the Wiring Regulations, published in March 2022.

During our revised training sessions, we look through the content of the regulations but there is also a focus on the key areas candidates may need for a job role.

The primary aim is to gain an understanding of the requirements contained within the BS7671, including the changes that may affect candidates and their work, to successfully comlplete the examination.

The following topics are covered:

  • Part 1 Scope, object and fundamental principles
  • Part 2 Definitions
  • Part 3 Assessment of general characteristics
  • Part 4 Protection for safety
  • Part 5 Selection and erection of equipment
  • Part 6 Inspection and testing
  • Part 7 Special installations or locations

Key changes in the 18th Edition since 17th Edition

  • Brown-coloured wiring regulations book (replaced the blue book in March 2022)
  • Protection against overvoltages - Clause 443 is likely to be overhauled
  • Protection against fire - Chapter 42 will be updated with extra information on arc fault detection
  • Updates to Isolation and Switching and to Surge Protection
  • The special location Section 753 Electrical Embedded Heating will be extended to include embedded electrical heating systems for surface heating, and will include de-icing and frost prevention systems
  • Appendix 16 covering aspects of energy efficiency

What changes were there in 2022?

Most of the changes are relevant to new types of technology such as solar panels and energy-efficient installations. The regulations will reflect the changes to ensure installations are safe, efficient, useful, able to meet developing standards and that consideration is given to electrical industry operations, the specific roles of electrical engineers and how quickly technology changes.

Significant changes are now incorporated within a new Part 8 of BS7671:2022 providing learners with a  new Chapter 82 that addresses - Prosumers Low Voltage electrical installations, removal of the risk assessment method for omitting additional RCD protection on socket outlets and new foundation earthing requirements. A brown Wiring Regulations textbook replaces the original 18th Edition Wiring Regulations textbook which was blue.

Glasgow Clyde College has adapted its 18th Edition course to reflect the changes within Amendment 2 of the wiring regulations.
