NQ Social Care - Level 5

The NQ Social Care Level 5 course is made up of a number of different units that combine to give students an overall introduction to Social Care.

Course content

Units that will be studied may include:

  • Care: Values and Principles in Care
  • Care: Human Development 
  • Care: Social Influences
  • Healthy Eating in a Care Setting
  • Mental Health Issues: An Introduction
  • Skills for College and Work - Guidance
  • Working in Health and Social Care Settings
  • Maintaining Safety in a Care Setting 
  • Introduction to Counselling
  • Working with Communities: Youth Work (Cardonald)
  • Administration: Presenting and Communicating Information (IT)
  • Communication
  • Working with Individuals with Additional Support Needs 
  • Recognise, Respond and Report Abuse in a Care Setting 
  • Recognise, Respond and Report Challenging Behaviour 
Please note that there is no placement element on this course

You will be assessed by continuous assessment with closed and open book assessments used.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Three general Standard Grades (3/4) one of which must be English, or three equivalent National 5 Qualifications (C or above) one of which must be English
  • Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but who have relevant life and/or care experience
  • Due to the number of internal candidates progressing to their next level of study, places on this courses may be limited
Selection process information

Progression routes

Successful completion of this course will allow you to progress on to the NQ Social Care Level 6, (or other care courses), and thereafter the HNC Social Services course. Many of the Units on the Level 5 course will be explored further on the Level 6 course, and students will be therefore be well prepared by undertaking this course first. It also gives students a solid introduction to the way a Further Education College works, including the assessment process.

Employment options may include care assistant posts in the care sector.
