NC Social Science - Level 5

This course is designed for those students who wish to begin study in the social sciences. It is designed to offer a foundation level of knowledge and understanding in several social science disciplines, and introduces students to the study of people and society.

Course content

The course includes National 5 level units in English, and a selection of Social Sciences.

The range of subjects offered include the following:

  • sociology
  • psychology
  • history and modern studies.
Please note that course content may vary slightly between campuses. Students will complete at least one full course (external exam) in a social sciences subject.

Selection process information 

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • A minimum of four National 4 level qualifications, which should include English or equivalent. These courses should include the ‘added value’ units and preference will be given to candidates with a social subject in their qualification. 
  • If English is not the applicant’s first language, they must have an ESOL qualification at Intermediate 2 or National 5 level
  • A positive reference (academic or employment).

Progression routes

Successful students may apply for progression to a variety of SCQF level courses, for example:  NC Social Sciences (level 6), other SCQF Level 6 courses in vocational areas (e.g. Social Care, Early Education and Childcare, etc.) to the General Education (Highers) programme in Glasgow Clyde College, or employment.

For courses starting in August 2017, you can make up to two applications.

Applications are made to a course and a first choice of campus. If the course is oversubscribed at your first choice you will be automatically considered for alternative sites and may be made an offer without a further application.
