NC Mechanical Engineering

The course is designed to allow candidates to develop knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles of Mechanical Engineering. The course has been designed to offer a balance of practical and theory suitable for candidates who may wish to progress to either employment or further their education. 

Applications are invited from candidates who are undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship or as part of their Professional Development. 

The course is available to study full time over 1 year or as a day release programme over 2 years.

Course content

Throughout the duration of the course you will undertake SQA NC Units which will lead to the NC Mechanical Engineering Award at SCQF Level 6 (G97J 46). The units that you will undertake are given below:

Core Units

  • Communication Core Skill Unit 
  • Mathematics: Technician 1 
  • Engineering: Applying Information Technology Mandatory


  • Statics
  • Engineering Dynamics: An Introduction
  • Thermofluids
  • Engineering Dynamics
  • Strength of Materials 

Optional Units

  • Engineering Dimensional Control
  • CAD for Engineers
  • Engineering Materials
  • Graphical Engineering Communications

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Four National 5s or equivalent standard grades or Intermediate 2, including maths and a science or a technical subject
  • Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but who have relevant life and/or work experience

Successful students may gain entry to the following courses at Glasgow Clyde College:

  • HND Mechanical Engineering
  • HND Electrical Engineering
  • HND Engineering Systems
  • HNC Manufacturing Engineering 

Previous students have progressed onto Apprenticeships in the Mechanical, Manufacturing, Maintenance, Aerospace and Ship Building sectors.
