HND Fitness, Health and Exercise

This course is designed to give students the underpinning knowledge and practical leadership skills required to pursue a career in the fitness industry, mainly within leisure centres, and/or progress into higher education. The course consists of 30 Higher National credits covering various fitness-related subjects. A PVG will be required to undertake the mandatory placement which is embedded in the course. Successful candidates who meet all Industry standards will be able to register as either Level 2 Gym instructor or Level 3 Personal Trainer with the Register of Exercise Professionals.

  • Gym-Based Exercise
  • Exercise Physiology and Anatomy
  • Group exercise (Studio Cycling)
  • Group Exercise with Music
  • Physical Activity for Children
  • Work Experience.
  • Working safely and effectively with clients

Students achieving the core HNC units along the Gym and/or Exercise to Music can gain REPs Level 2, which will improve your employability.

Second year

  • Current Exercise Trends
  • Applied Nutrition
  • Applied Fitness Testing for Special Populations
  • Applied Exercise Prescription for Special Populations
  • Metabolic considerations for Personal Trainers
  • Core strength and posture
  • Plan and Deliver Personal Training sessions

Students may also have the opportunity to sit the Active IQ/NASM Personal Trainer qualification provided you achieve the VRQ Gym Level 2.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • two Highers at C or above, one of which must be English-based
  • a relevant level 6 qualification in sport such as NC Sport and Exercise (Level 6), NQ Health and Fitness (Level 6), NQ Sports Coaching (Level 6) or NQ Sport and Fitness (Level 6) - must include Communications at level 6
  • demonstrable active interest in sport or fitness
  • two acceptable references
  • successful applicants will be required to attend an interview
  • applications are welcome from those without formal qualifications who can demonstrate an active interest in sport or fitness
  • entrance exam for those without formal qualifications but with relevant life/work experience
  • for those holding a relevant HNC it may be possible to access Year 2 of the HND.  Please contact the Faculty directly.

  • 3rd year entry to BSc (Hons) Sports Development at University of the West of Scotland
  • Employment in the sports industry.
