HND Engineering Systems

This course is designed to enable engineers to develop their skills and competence to a higher level across a wide range of modern engineering systems including Electrical, Mechanical and Mechatronic Systems. Candidates will develop applications of knowledge, understanding and skills in an engineering systems approach. It will equip them to seek employment in industrial, public sector and service organisations.

The course is suitable for those already working in the Engineering industry who are looking to progress towards professional Engineering status. It can also lead to various degree programmes at university.


Course content

Throughout the duration of the course you will undertake SQA HN Units which will lead to the HND Engineering Systems Award (G8G5 16); a sample of the types of the units that you will undertake are given below:

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Minimum of two Highers from English, Mathematics, Physics or another technical or science subject
  • A National Certificate in appropriate discipline
  • Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but who have relevant life and/or work experience

Progression routes

Full time students who successfully complete HND Engineering Systems with a Graded Unit 2 result of B or above will be able to apply for second or third year entry into various university Engineering degree programmes at:

  • Glasgow Caledonian University
  • University of the West of Scotland
  • Napier University

It should be noted that for direct entry into the third year of the full time university programmes will require applicants to successfully achieve the HN Units in Engineering Mathematics 1 to 5

Part-time students who successfully complete HND Engineering Systems with a Graded Unit 2 result of B or above will be able to apply for part-time Engineering degree programmes at: 

  • Glasgow Caledonian University
  • University of the West of Scotland
  • Napier University
  • The Open University

Previous students have gained employment in the Energy, Maintenance, Design and Process Engineering sectors at Technician or Junior Engineering level.
