HND Contemporary Art Practice

This innovative Fine Art course is designed to develop students as creative practitioners equipped with transferrable knowledge and skills. The course is project driven and offers students an inter-disciplinary programme covering 2D and 3D art practice.

This course is ideal in equipping students in preparation for Art School delivered through a mixture of studio practice, group critiques, demonstrations and study visits which will aid students to become independent learners.

Course content

• 3D Art Practice: sculpture and installation 
• 2D Art Practice: photography and painting 
• Drawing: Life Drawing and Developmental Drawing 
• Digital Artwork: Photoshop and Video
• Printmaking 
• Portfolio Building
• Conceptual Processes 
• Contextual Studies 
• Collaborative Working. 

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • minimum of two Highers (including art) plus a suitable portfolio or one Higher and a good portfolio from an appropriate NQ/NC level course
  • applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but who have relevant life and/or work experience
  • entry will be by interview and portfolio
  • direct entry to year 2 will be dependent on prior qualification and portfolio.
Selection process information

Progression routes

  • Successful students may progress onto second or third year at Art School
  • Previous students have progressed onto degree programmes at the following:  Edinburgh College of Art, Dundee DJCA, Grays' School of Art, Glasgow School of Art, Heriot-Watt University, Highlands and Islands University, University of the West of Scotland, University of Cumbria, Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, St Martins School of Art, Bristol School of Art, UCA Canterbury, Liverpool School of Art and Design, Amsterdam School of the Arts etc.

Applications are made to a course and a first choice of campus. If the course is oversubscribed at your first choice you will be automatically considered for alternative sites and may be made an offer without a further application.
