HND Computing Software Development

This is a two year course. Year one focuses on studying a wide range of computing skills with an emphasis on software development. In year two the emphasis is largely the software development lifecycle and programming. At the end of year one, you may choose to follow an alternative computing route such as networking, technical support or computer science, although additional subjects may be required.

You will also have the opportunity to study towards an Oracle Academy qualification and Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA). 

At the Cardonald Campus, you may also have the opportunity to study computer forensics, ethical hacking and CompTIA A+

These qualifications are highly desired by employers. You'll learn a range of languages from VB.NET, C#, Java and C++ and PHP.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • One Higher and one Intermediate 2, or equivalent National 5, from Computing, Maths, English, IT or Science
  • NQ in Computing or IT
  • Applicants are also invited from those without formal entry qualifications but with relevant work experience
  • A suitable employer or academic reference

We are accepting applications for direct entry onto year two for this course. To be eligible for year two, you must have a relevant HNC. To apply for year two, please contact the Faculty Administrator.

Those who meet the entry criteria and have a suitable reference will be accepted on the course without interview. All other applicants will be interviewed.

Progression routes

  • Third year entry to various degree courses at University of the West of Scotland, Glasgow Caledonian University, Edinburgh Napier University and Abertay University
  • Second year entry to Glasgow/Strathclyde/Edinburgh Universities 
  • Employment as a junior software engineer or systems developer.
