HND Administration and Information Technology

The HND Administration and Information Technology course allows students to develop essential specialist knowledge and skills (e.g. ICT, team working, project management, research and planning, critical and evaluative thinking) relevant to current administrative practice and an awareness of professional issues (e.g. legal, data management and ethical considerations) and prepares students for appropriate employment or progression to relevant degree programmes. The first year of this course incorporates the HNC.

At the Langside Campus, students can engage with specialist medical units to increase their chances of employment within the medical administrative field.

Year 2 (HND)

  • Office Management 
  • Human Resources
  • Employment Law
  • Advanced IT (Word Processing, Database, Spreadsheet)
  • Information and Communication Technology in Business
  • Developing the Individual within a Team
  • Work Experience (subject to availability)
  • Presentation Skills 
  • Graded Unit Exam and Project
  • Possible non-core units include: Customer Care, Economics, Business, Statistics, Business Startup and Marketing.
Assessment will be mainly continuous, with a mix of practical and theoretical assessments. There are also two Graded Unit exams which are closed book examinations.

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Two Higher passes at band A-C, OR
  • NC/Q (level 5 or above) in Administration, Business or Accounting along with an exemplary reference from your current college 
  • Applications are welcome from those without formal qualifications but with relevant life/work experience
  • An interview will be part of the selection process.
Selection process information

Progression routes

  • Third-year entry to various degree courses at the University of the West of Scotland, Glasgow Caledonian University and to other UK universities.
  • The HND has a strong managerial focus which enables candidates to progress more quickly to supervisory/management roles.
  • The course prepares successful learners for entry to a wide range of positions in offices, local Government, the health service, manufacturing and retail.
