HND Additional Support Needs: Managing and Supporting the Services

This 1-year course is designed to provide a specialist qualification for students wishing to work with children or adults who have support needs, with an emphasis on learning support. The course develops the underpinning theoretical knowledge and understanding gained in the HNC and provides practical experience.

Course content

The course will develop your first line managerial skills through the delivery of units which include:

  • Effective Leadership and Management
  • Learner Support: Related Legislation
  • Managing Quality
  • ASN : Working in an Additional Support Needs Setting
  • A Graded Unit
  • Collaborating with Other Agencies
  • Purposes and Processes of Assessment
  • Personal Development Planning
  • A Work Placement in a relevant ASN setting

Assessment is continuous. There is no final examination.

  • HNC Additional Support Needs: Supporting the Individual
  • HNC Early Education and Childcare
  • HNC Social Care
  • Satisfactory reference
Selection process information

Progression routes

  • BA degree year at the University of Strathclyde 
  • Application for social work, teaching and other related degrees
  • Application to the BA Learning Disability/ Difficulties at Abertay University

Enhanced employment in supporting children or adults in additional support needs contexts.
