HNC Manufacturing Engineering

This course is designed to allow candidates to develop their knowledge and understanding of the main principles of Manufacturing Engineering. It will equip them to seek employment in the design, mechanical and manufacturing sectors. The course is available to study full time over 1 year or as day release programme over 2 years.

Applications are invited from candidates who are undertaking a Modern Apprenticeship or as part of their Professional Development. 

Course content

Throughout the duration of the course you will undertake SQA HN Units which will lead to the HNC Manufacturing Engineering Award (G83Y 15).

  • Engineering Drawing
  • Materials Selection
  • Manufacturing: Process and Equipment Selection
  • Quality Management: An Introduction
  • Economics of Manufacture
  • Design for Manufacture
  • Communications
  • Engineering Principles
  • Engineering Mathematics 1
  • Manufacturing Engineering: Graded Unit 1
  • Engineering Mathematics 2 (Full-time only)
  • Dynamics (Full-time only)
  • Information Technology: Applications Software 1 (Full-time only)

Entry requirements (minimum)

  • Minimum of two Highers from English, Mathematics, Physics or another technical or science subject
  • A National Certificate in appropriate discipline
  • Applications are also invited from those without formal qualifications but who have relevant life and/or work experience.

Progression routes

Full time Candidates who successful complete the HNC Manufacturing Engineering Award with a Graded Unit 1 result of B or above as well as successfully achieving the HN Units in Engineering Mathematics 1 to 3 will be able to apply for First year entry into the various Universities Engineering Degree Programmes at:

  • Glasgow Caledonian University
  • University of the West of Scotland

Part-time Candidates who successful complete the HNC Manufacturing Engineering Award with a Graded Unit 1 result of B or above will be able to apply for Part-time Engineering Degree Programmes at:

  • Glasgow Caledonian University
  • University of the West of Scotland
  • The Open University

Previous students have gained employment in the Energy, Maintenance, Design, Manufacturing and Mechanical Engineering sectors at Technician or Junior Engineering level.
